The SSA National Fall Conference and Trade Show in Las Vegas is a mecca for self storage building and technology trends, real estate investor training, and overall industry knowledge. In this short video, Austin Jones, Director of Sales at storEDGE, recaps the fall trade show and discusses the most important takeaways from the conference and what they mean for the future of self storage.
Jana Haecherl: Hi, everybody! My name is Jana Haecherl and I work here at storEDGE in marketing and I’m here with Austin Jones, who is Director of Sales at storEDGE. Last week we wrapped up the SSA Fall Trade Show and Conference in Las Vegas. So today we’re just going to talk a little bit about some of the stuff we learned and what we took away from the show. So, Austin - what’d you think of the fall show? How did it go?
Austin Jones: I think the fall show went really well. For several years in a row now it’s been record attendance. There are a lot of people interested in the industry right now. There is just a lot of investment, and a lot of activity. There’s a lot of talk around technology and there’s a lot of talk around consolidation. It’s a pretty exciting time in self storage. There are things that I learn still going to those shows, even after being to a whole bunch of them. It’s good to see people face to face and it’s good to be reminded of what’s going on in the industry and see what the current trends are - from a real estate standpoint, a financing standpoint, and a technology standpoint. It’s just a place you can go to get a feel of what’s going on right now across the whole industry.
Haecherl: What was your biggest takeaway from the show?
Jones: Well, I think there were probably a couple, but the biggest thing, obviously, is that we’re right in the middle of a merger with SiteLink and SpareFoot. There was a lot of talk around that. I think that people feel like things are changing maybe quicker than they have in the past, from a vendor technology standpoint specifically. There’s also still a lot of talk around new supply coming into the markets and how that is going to impact occupancy, rates, availability, and things like that, so it was a lot to take in. There are just a lot of things going on in the industry right now that are happening at the same time. But the biggest takeaway I think is that there’s just a lot of communication and a lot of people sharing ideas and sharing what they’re hearing from other people, like what’s working for them and what’s not, what markets are doing well and which ones should be concerned about, which tools are working and which ones are coming down the pipe that are exciting, those types of things.
