Katelyn Wyss is an Account Manager who works with our high-power sales team to develop client relationships and ensure their long-term success. She’s our go-to expert on all things client vision and strategy, and there’s no one better to ask for tips to improve your golf game. In this Meet Team storEDGE interview, she shares her career story, the top item on her bucket list, and her secret to building great relationships with our self storage clients.

You’ve been at storEDGE almost since the beginning. Can you tell me how you got to storEDGE?

I was brought to the company in 2011 as an Account Coordinator for the website platform by a friend of mine from high school who thought I would love the people and the work. Turns out he was right (shout out to Tom Cox!). I think at the time there were only 12 or so employees, so I was just thrown right into the mix. I learned everything all at once. It was during those days that I really got into the mentality of, “wherever I can help, whatever I can do, I will.” I really loved working on a lot of different projects and wearing a lot of different hats.

Before we landed in self storage, we were still trying to find our niche and developing new apps, like a mobile-rewarding SMS platform for restaurants. Our CEO, Dan Miller, thought the restaurant app was something I could take on as a Product Owner, and I jumped right in. Even though the app ultimately did not pan out, I was able to learn so much, and we still have great relationships with our former restaurant clients to this day. I guess I always knew that I would end up back in account management for the self storage industry - it just kinda fit! Now, I couldn’t be happier with where we’ve landed.

The company has grown tremendously since you started. What are some of the most significant changes you’ve seen? What has surprised you?

The most significant change is obviously just the sheer amount of incredibly talented individuals that have been able to add to the team. I think we are six times larger than when I started. What is really surprising is that even though we have grown so much in a short amount of time, we have been able to keep the same culture as we had at the beginning. You still get the one on one training, and you still feel like we are all one team working toward one goal. Now, there are just so many more people to learn from. One thing I learned early on is that really nothing surprises me about storEDGE. It seems whatever goal we set, we hit it and always go above and beyond, faster and better. Even though there are so many people, storEDGE has never felt corporate - everyone from the CEO to new hires are constant resources and always willing to share knowledge. From day one, we've always valued our clients as partners to really help drive our product development. Seven years later, this concept is still stronger than ever. I am so fortunate to be working with partners who continue to add value to new and existing products and features.

As an Account Manager, what does a typical day look like for you?

Tricky, tricky question. I really never know what my day will bring, but one thing is for sure: my day always starts and ends with the client. I work with our partners both on our marketing websites and our facility management software to help drive new features and set priorities for development. The relationships I have with our clients and the feedback I get from them provides us with a ton of valuable insight. The product management team takes that feedback and uses it to define and develop new storEDGE features that shape our technology.

What do you find most rewarding about your role?

It’s incredibly rewarding to see clients start with storEDGE and come out on the other side better for it. I work with our clients constantly, and their feedback makes both me and our products better. I enjoy being able to take their vision and combine it with our technology to help them improve their business. I love when our technology is able to solve a problem for them, and if I can play a small part in helping their business thrive, that is what is most rewarding to me.

What do you think it takes to make a lasting connection with a client?

Trust and organization with communication. I need to have my finger on the pulse of their business to know what their priorities are and understand the big picture of their storage operations. By making great connections with our clients, I’m able to ensure that we’re always working on new things that are helpful for our clients and meeting their needs. Having that communication and being able to set expectations (and deliver!) is so important in my role, and I make it my top priority every day. Setting expectations for communication helps keep both the client and the development team happy. It’s the perfect Utopia.

What’s your most memorable accomplishment or favorite project you’ve worked on with storEDGE?

I really value all of our products because I’ve been able to see how they all impact each other. I’m very fortunate to have been heavily involved in our marketing website platform over the years, and I’ve recently begun to straddle both our software and website products. I think the most exciting thing has been seeing new features come out that improve our technology and fit into our clients’ vision for how they’ll utilize our products together to improve strategy. Being able to be a part of our new products from the beginning is always exciting to me - I enjoy seeing how they develop. I’m proud to say I’ve been a part of a lot of projects at storEDGE that have helped propel the next generation of self storage technology.

I know you and your husband like to travel, and you’ve gone on some fun trips. What’s your dream travel destination?

I do love to travel! I like going places where I’m not stuck doing one thing. I am not someone who can lay on a beach all day - I like to get out and do things. To me, the best travel destinations are places where I can both learn something and relax. I had the opportunity to go to Italy in 2015 and visit some historical places, all while drinking great wine - that will be a hard trip to beat in the future. I also love anything where I’m able to explore and try new things. My trip to Alaska was breathtaking, and adventures like climbing Mayan ruins and exploring Belize are experiences you will always treasure. I love any travel destinations that are unique and off the beaten path.

What’s the top item on your bucket list?

That’s a tough one - it seems to change all the time! Sitting on hole #16 at the Waste Management Open is right up my alley. I’ve had so many great opportunities and experiences, and I think recreating some of those with my daughter is definitely on my bucket list.

What’s your go-to drink?

Wine. White or red, boxed or bottle, I love them all equally.
