It’s breast cancer awareness month! You don’t have to wear pink every day (or even like the color pink!) to show your support: here are 10 ways your self storage brand can donate, give back, or get involved to support this great cause.
This one couldn’t be easier! Simply show your support by asking self storage managers to pin the pink ribbon on their uniform during the month of October. You can order pink ribbons for your team at choosehope.com, or even offer ribbons or pins for sale to storage customers at your desk to benefit your favorite local or national breast cancer charity.
Have you ever seen those big pink buses? Mobile mammography units (or “mammovans”) are a thing. Mobile mammography units offer free, convenient, and safe breast cancer screenings to underserved women over 40 who would otherwise not have access to mammography screenings. Many women’s hospitals around the country offer mobile mammography coaches, with a calendar on their website to let local residents know where their mammovan will be over the next month. Local businesses can bring the pink bus to their business to offer on-site screenings to employees, customers, and community members.
If your self storage facility has a large, easy-to-access parking lot near other major businesses in your community, it just might be the perfect site for a mobile mammography screening event! There are tons of benefits and perks to hosting a mobile mammography vehicle, the biggest benefit being giving back to your community. All you have to do to get started is contact your local mammography vehicle team and ask to host and organize a mobile screening event.
Does your office have one of those community pinboards where you can place information about upcoming auction events, community blood drives, and girl scout cookie sales? If the answer is yes, then this is the perfect place for a little educational information about breast cancer awareness!
Got a team of managers who would love to get involved and aren’t afraid to sweat? Perfect! Find a local run/walk 5K in your area. There are dozens of breast cancer charity walks out there, from Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure to The Pink 5K by The Breast Cancer Charities of America. It is an affordable, easy, and fun way to get your whole team involved, and it takes just one afternoon out of your month.
Breast cancer awareness month tends to get overshadowed by the excitement of trick-or-treating and halloween decor on sale at Target. Why not bring both into the spotlight by hosting a haunted house at your storage facility where all proceeds go to breast cancer research?
Hosting a haunted house is one of the funnest things you can do as a business owner. You can deck out one of your warehouse-style buildings with spooky stuff, collaborate with other local businesses for sponsorship, ask self storage managers (or your teenagers!) to play the scarers, sell tickets online or in your office, and promote the event on your local radio station or evening news. You never know - it just might become a tradition you look forward to year after year.
If your breast cancer awareness chapter hosts charity or fundraising events throughout the year, they probably have a lot of stuff they need a place for! You’ve got the space, and they need it. Volunteer one of your units as a safe place for a breast cancer awareness charity to store their race/walk or event supplies. Donating a storage unit to a local charity is a great way to give back, and offers great PR benefits for your business.
This one is simple and easy. Customers are used to being prompted to donate $1 to a charity when checking out at the grocery store, pet supplies store, or coffee shop, and many people are happy to pay an extra dollar to donate to a great cause. You can set up charity donations on your online bill payment website, or simply set up a donation box in your office to collect spare change for breast cancer research when tenants come in to pay their bill or buy supplies.
Wine storage facilities, here is the perfect opportunity for you: Host a wine tasting social with a local restaurant or bar, with all proceeds going to breast cancer research. RV storage facility? Collaborate with a local sporting goods store or an auto-repair facility to offer a discount event with trick-or-treating for the kids and donate all proceeds to breast cancer charities. No matter what your speciality is, it is easy to find other businesses in your area who share your interests and would love to collaborate for charity.
If you have a modern facility with a community space, like a conference room or meeting area with free wi-fi, then you might just have the perfect space for an educational event! Talk to the local chapter of your favorite breast cancer charity and ask them if they need a space for future educational events or group meetings. Many breast cancer charities offer educational nights for local residents to come in and speak to a health care specialist about screenings, or they might simply need a space where they can get together and organize upcoming fundraisers. Donating your community space is a great way to support the cause and get involved.
Coupons, galore! Many self storage owners like the “first month free rent” promotion, and use it in conjunction with other seasonal events or holidays. Why not make breast cancer awareness part of your seasonal promotions? Use a promotion code like “GOPINK” or “FORTHECURE,” or allow tenants to give in support of a loved one who is fighting breast cancer or in memory of a loved one who lost their battle with the disease. Post the donation messages publicly to honor breast cancer survivors and losses. Offer one-month of free rent to all new tenants who donate $25 or more to a local breast cancer charity. Work with your local charities to set up donation boxes at your office, or allow for tenants to donate online through your website.
However big or small your donation, or the scale to which your self storage brand is able to get involved, supporting a worthwhile cause like breast cancer research and awareness is a win-win. Don’t be afraid to get out there and make a difference. Your efforts might just save a life!
